Support

Last updated 2 August 2026

Dane is a small app made by one person. If something is wrong, email support@dane42.com and describe what you saw. Expect a reply within a few days.

Nothing you capture is ever lost by asking for help. Every photograph, video, recording and note is written to a plain folder in your iCloud Drive before it is written to the app's database. If the app misbehaves, your files are already safe and readable without it — open Files → iCloud Drive → Dane.

Common questions

I was invited to someone's diary. How do I join?

You will get two links. The first installs Dane; the second is the invitation itself. Install the app first, then open the second link — or open the app, choose I was invited to a diary, and paste the invitation link there. Invitations are addressed to you specifically, so a link forwarded to someone else will not work for them.

Where are my photographs actually stored?

In two places at once, on purpose. In your iCloud so they sync between devices and to the people you have invited, and as ordinary files in Files → iCloud Drive → Dane, arranged by year and month, alongside a plain-text description of each entry. Open index.html in that folder to browse the whole diary in a web browser, with no app involved.

Nothing is syncing.

Check that you are signed in to iCloud and that iCloud Drive is on. Dane tells you honestly when it cannot sync rather than showing a reassuring green tick — look at Settings → Archive → Mirror status. Capture keeps working while offline; anything you add catches up later.

Can I get everything out?

Yes, at any time, from Settings → Archive → Export now. You get a dated .zip containing your media, a spreadsheet-readable table of every entry, and a plain-English description of the format. Nothing is proprietary and nothing needs Dane to read it.

Someone removed me from their diary. What happens to what I added?

What you added stays in their diary, still credited to you. Your own copy of the archive stays on your phone in Files, and the app shows you where it is and how to export it. Nothing of yours is deleted.

I deleted something by mistake.

Deleted entries sit in Settings → Trash for 30 days and can be restored by swiping. Even after that, the underlying files are moved to a _deleted folder in your archive rather than destroyed.

Does Dane work without a network?

Yes. Capturing never waits for a network, an account, or a permission. Anything captured offline is saved immediately and syncs when it can.

Reporting a problem

Email support@dane42.com with:

Please do not send photographs of your family to demonstrate a problem — a description is enough, and the developer would rather not receive them.
